Leland Bell is an Anishinabe from the Wikwemikong Unceded First Nation Manitoulin Island,Ontario, Canada. His Anishinabe name is Bebaminojmat. He is Loon Clan and is a “second degree” member of the Three Fires Midewiwin Society. Leland has been painting for the past thirty years. His work is represented in many prominent art collections in North America and Europe. He has been actively involved in the grassroots development of several organisations.
Leland was influenced in his youth by the Manitou Arts Camp, as well as, the Ojibway Cultural Foundation Arts Camps, on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. It was during this period that his style first emerged, while immersing himself in his cultural heritage. Encompassed within this experience, was the participation in ceremonies that included teachings from Elders.
Leland concludes that these art camps created a spirit of purpose and passion. He says, “The most memorable experiences were the creative interactions with his fellow artists and the results that emerged.”
